A Guide to Jewish Genealogy in Latvia and Estonia - The first downloadable JGSGB Jewish Ancestors? Guide

Arlene Beare has extensively updated & rewritten her 2006 Guide to Jewish genealogy in Latvia and Estonia. As well as a limited number of printed copies, the publication is now in ebook format published by The Jewish Genealogical Society of Great Britain. All web links are clickable & will take the reader to the relevant website to help further their research.

The download file is a PDF document. To purchase the file, you add the product to the shopping cart and follow the normal process of paying for it. You will then receive confirmation e-mail messages about your payment, the order and a final e-mail with a link to the PDF file. Clicking on the link in the final e-mail will download the PDF file to your computer or other devices such as smart phones and e-readers.

The book will be of enormous use to researchers not only from Latvia and Estonia but elsewhere in Eastern Europe. There is advice on carrying out Genealogical Research, but is not exclusively restricted to Latvia, Courland and Estonia.  Details of Revision Lists and Censuses were similar in other parts of the Russian Empire such as Lithuania.

There was a lot of movement between Lithuania and Latvia. The emigration patterns are of particular interest and include passport and travel document details. The book contains the excellent chapter written by Nick Evans on Emigration detailing how our Ancestors got to other Countries from Latvia always remembering that many Lithuanians may also have sailed from Libau now Liepaja.

There is information on Sources in the UK and with one click for example, you can go to the National Archives and order Certificates. There are also links to Genealogical sites of general genealogical interest as well as a short Introduction to Genetic Genealogy and Social Media.  Details of touring Riga is included in the Travel chapter.

Up to date Information is available for telephone numbers, email addresses and Archival details.

There are now two downloadable addenda updating the content of the Guide. These are available via the links: addendum 1 (2019) and addendum 2 (2020)
